MAYS LANDING — An Atlantic City man has been sentenced to 25 years in state prison for strangling a 23-year-old mother of two in May of 2012, Acting Atlantic County Prosecutor Jim McClain announced.
On Friday, Jan. 31, David J. Williams, 49, was sentenced in accordance with a plea agreement to 25 years in New Jersey State Prison for causing the death of Siddiqah Bryant, of Atlantic City.
In May of 2012, family members reported Bryant missing after she failed to show up for work. Atlantic City Police began investigating Bryant’s disappearance when they discovered her dead inside of a parked van behind the Atlantic City Bus Terminal on the 1800 block of Arctic Avenue on May 17, 2012.
An autopsy later confirmed Bryant’s cause of death to be strangulation and declared the death a homicide.
Atlantic City Police and Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes detectives immediately began investigating Williams, whom the victim had a restraining order against and who had a history of domestic violence offenses involving the victim.
During the course of the investigation, detectives determined that Williams fled New Jersey around the time of the murder. Detectives tracked Williams to an address in Stinton, Texas, where he was apprehended and charged with Bryant’s murder on July 30, 2012. He was subsequently extradited to stand trial in New Jersey.
On Nov. 13, 2013, Williams pleaded guilty to aggravated manslaughter.
During the plea, Williams admitted to strangling the victim with a telephone cord during an altercation in an Atlantic City motel room the day before her body was discovered. The defendant further admitted that after he strangled the victim, he placed her body into her vehicle and drove to the location where the victim was discovered; abandoning the vehicle and fleeing for Texas the next day.
At sentencing, several of the victim’s family members addressed the court and the defendant directly. “You knew what you were going to do,” stated the victim’s father to Williams. “You threatened her.” “You planned it.”
“The defendant caused the death of a young woman who believed she was finally free of him,” stated Assistant prosecutor John Flammer during sentencing. “While the defendant may not receive a life sentence, he will have to suffer a lifetime of knowledge that he took the life of a young woman and made orphans of two innocent children.” “The defendant will spend the majority of his remaining life expectancy in prison.” “He will be in his 70’s before he can become eligible for parole.”
Pursuant to the No Early Release Act (NERA), Williams must serve 85-percent of the 25-year sentence, or 21 years and three months before becoming eligible for parole.
