MAYS LANDING – Two Atlantic City teens have pleaded guilty to attempted homicide in connection with wounding a 16-year-old boy while firing multiple shots into a group of teens outside of an Atlantic City apartment complex, acting Atlantic County Prosecutor Jim McClain announced.
On Friday, Jan. 24, Luis Carmargo, now 19, and Keanan Butcher, now 18, both pleaded guilty to attempted homicide and weapons offenses.
On Oct. 17, 2011, Carmago and Butcher fired multiple shots at a group of teens standing outside of the High Gate Apartments located on the 600 block of Absecon Boulevard. A 16-year-old male from Atlantic City, was struck and sustained a non-fatal gunshot wound to the shoulder.
Following an extensive investigation by the Atlantic City Police Department and the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office Shooting Response Team, Camargo and Butcher were charged with attempted homicide, aggravated assault and weapons offenses.
Due to the fact the defendants were under the age of 18 at the time of the crime, they were charged as juveniles, but subsequently waived up to adult criminal court.
During their pleas, both defendants admitted to firing several shots at the group of teens with the intent of causing serious bodily injury that could cause death.
In accordance with the plea agreement, Carmargo and Butcher will be sentenced to 10 years for the attempted homicide charge. Pursuant to the No Early Release Act (NERA), they must serve eight years and six months before becoming eligible for parole. They will also be sentenced to an additional five years, of which they must serve a minimum of three, for the weapons offenses. In total, the defendants will be required to serve a minimum of 11 1⁄2 years of the 15-year sentence before reaching parole eligibility. Upon release, they will be subject to an additional five years of parole supervision, according to Assistant Prosecutor Edmund Mallqui-Burgos, who represented the State in the matter.
Carmargo and Butcher will be sentenced on March 14, 2014 by Superior Court Judge Kyran Connor.
