Atlantic City Man Charged with Murder and Weapons Offenses for 2012 Shooting

MAYS LANDING – An Atlantic City man has been charged with the murder of a man who was caught in the crossfire of Stanley Holmes Village shooting in 2012, Acting Atlantic County Prosecutor Jim McClain announced.
On Jan. 2, 2014, Rodney Smiley, 24, was charged with murder, conspiracy and weapons offenses for his involvement in the shooting which claimed the life of Jose Oritz, 59, of Atlantic City.
On Sept. 6, 2012, Ortiz, who was a resident of Stanley Holmes Village, was riding his bicycle outside of his home when he was caught in a gunfire exchange between multiple individuals. 

Atlantic City police responded to the shooting scene and discovered Ortiz, who was suffering from a single gunshot wound to the abdomen. Ortiz was transported to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.
Following an extensive investigation conducted by Atlantic City Police and Prosecutor’s Office detectives, Smiley was identified as one of the shooters. Smiley, who is in custody on unrelated offenses, was served the charges today. He will remain jailed in lieu of $1 million full cash bail.
The Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit and the Atlantic City Police Department continue to investigate the involvement of additional individuals in this homicide.
