Galloway Man Dies After Being Struck by Vehicle While in Road on Scooter

Galloway Township Police responded to Moss Mill Road and Quail Hill Blvd on December 30, 2013 at 6:18 p.m. for reports of a motor vehicle accident involving a pedestrian.

According to Police, a 2007 Toyota Corolla driven by Michael Ryan, 24, of Galloway was traveling East on Moss Mill Road. While traveling, his vehicle struck a motorized scooter driven by Joseph Strike Jr., 52, of Galloway. The accident occurred near the intersection of Moss Mill Road and Quail Hill Blvd. 

After Initial Denial of Access to Public Opening of Proposals the 2014 List of Professional Proposals are Released

Galloway Township Council will begin the New Year selecting the Township's Professional staff. On Wednesday, December 18, 2013 Galloway Township Clerk accepted Request for Proposals for Professional Service for 2014. 

The public opening, as advertised was for 11:30 a.m. on December 18th. When Galloway Township News appeared for the public opening right before 11:30 a.m., we were initially denied access to the public opening by Township Manager Arch Liston.

UPDATED (Dec 30, 2013): Galloway Township Police are still in search of the following suspects. 

On May 28, 2013 the Galloway Township Police Department responded to the Days of Olde Antique establishment for the report of a Burglary and theft of over $18,000.00 in gold jewelry.

Victim(s) reported that a couple entered the business at approximately 2:30 pm and remained inside “casing” the location for close to an hour before opening an enclosed jewelry case and removing several substantially sized bracelets valued at over $18,000.00. The couple then fled the store before they could be detained.

Galloway Officials Shocked to Learn Through Media They May Lose Their Township Manager

Galloway Township Council may have to search for a new Township Manager if Arch Liston is confirmed by Atlantic City Council to be the next City Administrator for the City of Atlantic City. A nomination that took several Galloway Township Officials by surprise. Galloway Township has had four (4) Township Managers in the past three (3) years. 

Liston replaced former Township Manager Stephen Bonanni who currently has a lawsuit pending in Federal Court against Galloway Township and Mayor Don Purdy. 

Galloway Township Officials have confirmed that they were not aware of Township Manager Arch Liston's decision to leave Galloway Township. Township Manager Arch Liston has been nominated by Atlantic City Mayor-elect Don Guardian to be the next City Administrator for the City of Atlantic City, according to the Press of Atlantic City.  

Waretown Man Suffers Head Injury After SUV Crashes into Pole and Overturns

Galloway Township Police responded on December 27, 2013 at 5:11 p.m. to N. New York Road (Route 9) in the area of Kings Highways for a single vehicle accident.

The accident as described was a single vehicle accident into a utility pole. Philip Restifo, 75, of Waretown NJ, was traveling north on Route 9 when his vehicle, a 2014 Honda CRV, left the roadway to the right shoulder and struck a utility pole.  Restifo's vehicle became overturned in the process.

Three Injured and Transported to Area Hospitals After Accident at Route 30 and Pomona Road

On December 27, 2013 at 8:12 a.m. Galloway Township Police responded to a motor vehicle accident at the intersection of White Horse Pike (US#30) and Pomona Road. 

According to Police Andrew Weber, 21, of Clementon, NJ was driving a 2012 Ford Focus traveling westbound on Route 30 when he failed to observe the red traffic light at Pomona Road. Weber proceeded into the intersection and collided with a 2009 Toyota Venza driven by Robert Chiles, 84, of Galloway, NJ, who was traveling northbound on Pomona Road.

Five Galloway Police Officers Given Hard Decision in Possible Deal Between PBA and Township to End Grievances

Galloway Township News has exclusively learned of a possible deal between several officers in the Galloway Township Police Department and the Township of Galloway that may put an end to the lengthy litigation regarding Military Pay for several Police Officers. 

The deal however was described as an ultimatium which leaves five officers the responsibility of choosing the financial fate of several other officers in the Police Department while sacrificing their own financial state. 

According to sources, over the past several years the New Jersey State Policeman's Benevolent Association (PBA), Mainland Local #77 filed grievances against the Township for changing workers compensation and military leave policies.

The proposed deal leaves a decision to be made by five (5) police officers who are Military Personnel. Previously Chief Patrick Moran identified the five military Police Officers as Raymond Casanova, Patrick Neal, Rita Abatemarco, Paul Smith and Kevin Costa.  

Single Vehicle Accident Splits Utility Pole and Closes Leeds Point Road from Route 9 in Galloway Township

Galloway Township Police responded to a single vehicle accident at US Route 9 - New York Road and Leeds Point Road on Thursday, December 26, 2013.

According to preliminary reports, a flat bed truck from Woodhaven Lumber and Millwork Inc., was traveling north on US Route 9 (New York Road) when the truck struck a utility pole and a billboard before coming to rest in front of the Leeds Point Shopping center. 

The utility pole was split in half and substantial damage to the billboard could be seen.  

Galloway Road Compost Site Accepting Christmas Trees

Galloway Township residents may bring their Christmas trees to the Galloway Road Compost Site from Saturday, December 28, 2013 until Friday, January 24, 2014.  Hours for the site are:  WEDNESDAY TO SATURDAY from 8 AM-2:30 PM. 

This collection is for Christmas trees only…No tinsel or ornaments.

The trees will be recycled into mulch that will be available free of charge to Galloway residents.

10-year old Fatally Injured in Single Vehicle Crash in Mullica Township

It is with a heavy heart this holiday season that the Mullica Township Police Department releases details of a motor vehicle crash that resulted in the passing of one of its own residents, a ten year old child. 

On December 21st at approximately 9:11pm a 911 caller reported a one car motor vehicle crash on Weekstown Road (Cy. Rt. 612) between 5th Avenue and Pleasant Mills Road (Cy. Rt. 643). Officers arrived and found a single vehicle crash.

UPDATED: New Jersey State Police Seek Help in Identifying Body Found in Stafford Forge State Forest

UPDATED: According to Asbury Park Press, NJ State Police have released an updated colored rendering of the unidentified man. 

Eagleswood, N.J. - State troopers from Tuckerton Station are investigating the suspicious death of an unidentified man found in the Stafford Forge State Forest yesterday at mid-day by two people walking a dog. There was no obvious signs of trauma. An autopsy was performed yesterday, but the cause and manner of death have not yet been determined.

Atlantic City Man Indicted for Operating Human Trafficking Ring; Charges Include Aggravated Sexual Assault and Prostitution

MAYS LANDING – An Atlantic City man has been indicted for operating a human trafficking ring in which he held multiple women captive in motel rooms and forced them into prostitution, Acting Atlantic County Prosecutor Jim McClain announced today.

On Thursday, Dec. 19, an Atlantic County Grand Jury indicted Donnie Bethea, 30, on 15 counts; including six counts of human trafficking. Assistant Prosecutor Danielle Buckley represented the State in the matter.

Galloway Police Assist in Dismantling Large Heroin Trafficking Ring Operation in Egg Harbor City

EGG HARBOR CITY – A joint undercover narcotics investigation resulted in the dismantling of a large organized heroin trafficking ring operating out of an Egg Harbor City apartment complex, Acting Atlantic County Prosecutor Jim McClain announced.

On Wednesday, Dec. 18, members of the Prosecutor’s Office Guns, Gangs and Narcotics Unit, the Atlantic County Emergency Response Team and the Egg Harbor City, Galloway Township and Pleasantville Police Departments simultaneously executed search warrants at two units in the Philadelphia Village Housing Complex located at 1000 Buffalo Avenue.

Councilwoman Whitney Ullman Leaves Shocking Sentiments Behind as other Members of Council Bid Farewell; Video Released

On December 10, 2013 Councilman Thomas Bassford, Councilman Jim McElwee and Councilwoman Whitney Ullman bid farewell by giving speeches at their last council meeting as an elected official. Bassford and Ullman choose not to run for re-election while McElwee was unsuccessful at his attempt for re-election. 

Bassford and McElwee delivered their farewell speeches as Ullman delivered a prepared speech that to some was a shock. Described by several council members, Ullman has been extremely positive and always a pleasure to work with. Ullman's speech however took aim at the previous municipal leadership citing it "Disgraceful, Immature and Disheartening." Ullman also voiced her displeasure of the "fighting" and "bullying" that took place.

One Saturday each month from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. participants can look forward to a compelling lecture on poetry and reading from a visiting poet.  A light luncheon is offered, compliments of the library and local food service businesses. UPDATED: Egg Harbor Township Police Search for Suspect in Home Invasion Robbery and Stabbing

The victim of the home invasion robbery has been identified as Charles Sweetman, 91 years of age from Egg Harbor Township. Sweetman’s medical condition at the time of this update is critical but stable with knife wounds to the neck and chest.

On Tuesday, December 17, 2013, at approximately 8:52 am, the Egg Harbor Township Police Department responded to a residence in the Tower East Mobile Home Park, in the Cardiff section of the township, in reference to a unknown problem. 

Absecon Police Investigating Armed Robbery at Royal Lodge; Searching for Suspects

The Absecon Police Department is investigating an armed robbery at the Royal Lodge located at 553 Absecon Blvd. At about 2124 Hrs. dispatch received a call from one of the victims reporting that three black males had entered the office and inquired about room rates. 

They then forced their way behind the counter and pointed a handgun at the victims. The five (5) victims were then bound and held at gunpoint while the apartment was ransacked. The suspects stole approximately $3,000.00 in cash and $2,600.00 in jewelry and electronics.

Pedestrian Hit on Shore Road After Failing to Use Crosswalk

On December 14, 2013 at approximately 6:23 PM, the Absecon Police Department received multiple 911 calls reporting a pedestrian motor vehicle accident on Shore Road and the intersection of Tremont Avenue. 

Responding officers arrived to find 33 year old pedestrian, Tanvir Zaman, lying in the roadway unconscious with unknown injuries.

On Friday, December 13, 2013 at approximately 1:00 a.m. a motor vehicle crash was reported at the intersection of Nesco and Jackson Roads. A second report was soon received that indicated that the vehicle was on fire and the driver was trapped in the vehicle. 

Officers arrived to find a vehicle fully engulfed. They also found the driver and a passer by outside of the vehicle. It was discovered that the driver, John Hem 22 of Barnegat Light, who is now under investigation for driving while intoxicated, was trapped in the vehicle as it was on fire.

Two Galloway Township Men Indicted on First-Degree Cocaine and Weapon Charges

TRENTON – Acting Attorney General John J. Hoffman announced that two Atlantic County men were indicted today on narcotics and weapons charges, including a first-degree cocaine charge, resulting from an investigation by the Atlantic City Violent Crimes Task Force.

Ruben Sewell, 33, and Lavelle Davis, 34, who reside together on Buck Drive in Galloway Township, were indicted today by an Atlantic County grand jury.  Each man is charged with possession of cocaine with intent to distribute (1st degree), possession of cocaine (3rd degree), possession of heroin with intent to distribute (3rd degree), possession of heroin (3rd degree), unlawful possession of a handgun (2nd degree), possession of a handgun during commission of a drug offense (2nd degree), possession of a firearm as a convicted felon (2nd degree), and possession of prohibited weapons and devices (hollow-point bullets) (4th degree).

UPDATED: Single Vehicle Accident on Moss Mill Road Claims the Life of Galloway Woman

Galloway Township Police have reported a 26-year old Galloway woman died after her car lost control at the corner of Moss Mill Road and Harvard Terrace in Galloway Township.

According to Police, on December 11, 2013 at 9:20 p.m. Lindsey K. Sickler of Galloway Township was traveling west on Moss Mill Road approaching Harvard Terrace and lost control of her vehicle. 

Suspect in Armed Bank Robbery of TD Bank in Absecon Caught Two Hours Later in Delaware

Officers from the Absecon Police Department responded to the TD Bank at 601 White Horse Pike in Absecon for an armed robbery that just occurred. Employees at the bank stated they were preparing to open for the day when they noticed a suspicious male loitering in the parking lot. 

Several minutes later, an assistant manager was opening the bank for business when the same male was seen driving a silver Hyundai sedan into a fire lane near the front doors. The male exited the car and brandished a black handgun as he pushed his way past the assistant manager and another witness.

Committee Advances Connors-Rumpf-Gove Measure to Combat Heroin Epidemic

Bipartisan-supported legislation introduced by Senator Christopher J. Connors, Assemblyman Brian E. Rumpf and Assemblywoman DiAnne C. Gove to strengthen current State law in a comprehensive effort to combat the growing heroin epidemic was advanced today by the Assembly Judiciary Committee. The delegation’s initiative was developed as part of a collaborative effort with the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office.

Senator Conners, Assemblyman Rumpf and Assemblywoman Gove represent Galloway Township as part of Legislative District 9.

City of Absecon Appoints Former Galloway Manager as City Administrator; Shared Service Agreement Terminated

The City of Absecon has decided not to renew an Inter-local Shared Service Agreement with the Township of Galloway and in turn appointed former Galloway Manager Thomas L. Henshaw as their new City Administrator. 

The agreement due to expire on December 31, 2013 was to share the service of Galloways' Township Manager Arch Liston.  Liston was serving as Acting Administrator in Absecon with this agreement since June 2013. 

With the expiration of the agreement nearing, the City of Absecon notified Galloway Mayor Don Purdy on December 3, 2013 that the City would not be renewing the shared service agreement with Galloway. 

NJDOT Announces Travel Options and Outreach Plan for Upcoming Closure of Northbound Pulaski Skyway

Nearly 40,000 daily vehicle trips will be diverted for about two years
 during crucial phase of Skyway rehabilitation project 

(TRENTON) – New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced details of a plan to accommodate motorists who will not be able travel on the Pulaski Skyway northbound lanes for approximately two years starting in March 2014 while the bridge deck is replaced.

The Department is encouraging motorists to become familiar with the alternate routes and modes now, well in advance of the northbound lane closures.

Galloway Resident Among the 153rd New Jersey State Police Recruit Training Class Graduates

Fernando J. Gensollen of Galloway Township is among the 153rd New State Police Class Recruit Training Graduates.

Acting Attorney General John J. Hoffman and Colonel Rick Fuentes, Superintendent of the New Jersey State Police, presented badges to New Jersey’s newest state troopers during graduation ceremonies at Elizabeth High School this morning.

The153rd State Police Class is the most racially diverse in the history of the State Police, with 54 percent of the graduates coming from minority groups.

“The 153rd class represents a major step forward in our continuing effort to develop and maintain a State Police force that reflects the diverse population it serves. That is critical because the State Police is the most visible symbol of law enforcement throughout New Jersey, and every individual Trooper who puts on the uniform is recognized as a leader -- on the road, in his or her neighborhood and in the community at large,” said Governor Chris Christie of the new troopers.

Eight Charged in Identity Theft Ring Using Account Information of Customers of TD Bank including Galloway & Absecon

TRENTON – Acting Attorney General John J. Hoffman announced that eight people, including a former bank teller, have been charged with participating in an identity theft ring that used account information stolen from customers of TD Bank to steal more than $150,000 at bank branch offices in New Jersey. The eighth defendant was arrested today.

The following seven defendants were indicted on Oct. 28 by a state grand jury on second-degree charges of conspiracy, theft by deception and identity theft. The indictment stems from an investigation by the Division of Criminal Justice Financial & Computer Crimes Bureau.

Egg Harbor Township Enters Agreement to Purchase another West Atlantic City Motel

During the summer of 2009 the Township adopted the Redevelopment Plan for West Atlantic City. The adoption of the plan was a result of twenty years of planning, negotiations and meetings with various governmental agencies to adopt a redevelopment plan to transform West Atlantic City.

A component of the Redevelopment Plan is the acquisition of the obsolete motor court motels on the north side of the Black Horse Pike. These motels,in addition to being decrepit,often were the location of arrests for prostitution and drugs over the years.

On Monday, December 2, 2013, Mayor McCullough announced that the Township had reached an agreement with the owners of the Fortune Inn to acquire their motel as well as the vacant 3⁄4 acres of land adjacent to their motel. The Township Committee at their November 26, 2013 meeting introduced ordinances to purchase these properties.

Driver Extricated From Vehicle After Falling Asleep While Driving, Strikes Trees and Utility Pole

On December 5, 2013 at 3:02 p.m., members of the Township of Hamilton Police Department responded to County Road (CR) 552 and Harley Avenue for a report of a single car motor vehicle crash. 

The driver, identified as Maria Spear of Mays Landing, was traveling east on CR 552 and fell asleep, causing her vehicle to leave the roadway, strike several trees and a utility pole. 

The vehicle then caught fire and Maria was trapped inside. Several good samaritans as well as a member of the Township of Hamilton Rescue Squad stopped and assisted with extracting Spear from the vehicle and controlling the fire.

Atlantic City Electric Advises Customers to Avoid the “Green Dot” Scam

Atlantic City Electric reminds home and business owners to practice safety when someone claiming to represent a business contacts them either in person or by telephone, especially during the holiday season.

Recently, Atlantic City Electric has been alerted to a “Green Dot” scam. As such, information from law enforcement officials and other utilities has indicated that “scammers” are targeting not only residents, but also commercial businesses. 

Driver Hospitalized Following Serious Motor Vehicle Accident on Jimmie Leeds Road and Parkway Entrance

Galloway Township Police responded to motor vehicle accident on December 2, 2013 at 11:46 p.m. that resulted in one driver having internal injuries.

The crash that occurred on Jimmie Leeds Road near the Garden State Parkway entrance knocked out power to over 3,000 residents according to Atlantic City Electric and closed the road for approximately four (4) hours. 

According to Police, the driver of a 2008 Nissan Altima, Kishan L. Farrar, 30, of Galloway Township was driving west at a high rate of speed on Jimmie Leeds Road near the Garden State Parkway when he struck a 2005 Ford Explorer driven by Alan T. Edwards, 46, of Egg Harbor Township who was also driving west on Jimmie Leeds Road.

On Monday December 2nd 2013 at approximately 2:03 AM, the Absecon Police Department received a report of a male armed with a handgun inside the Comfort Inn hotel. 

With the assistance of the Pleasantville Police Department, the Absecon officers responded to the hotel and made contact with two subjects inside one of the rooms. 

After contact was made with the two subjects, identified as Qadree Nelson and Allan Moore, both of Atlantic City, they were found to be in possession of controlled dangerous substances. No weapons were located on the premises.

Pedestrian Suffers Serious Injury After Being Struck by Vehicle; Driver Charged with Assault and DWI

On November 28, 2013, the Egg Harbor Township Police Department responded to a pedestrian motor vehicle crash that occurred at approximately 10:30 pm on the Black Horse Pike at English Creek Avenue, in the Cardiff section of the township.

A 2005 Dodge Pickup operated by Michael Mitchell, 47 years of age from Williamstown, was making a left turn from South bound English Creek Avenue to eastbound Black Horse Pike when it left the roadway, struck the curb and then hit a pedestrian, Phillip Love, 31 years of age from Philadelphia Pennsylvania, was waiting at the bus stop when he was struck. Mitchell’s vehicle became disabled a short distance from the scene of the crash.

Egg Harbor Township Police Search for Suspect in Late Night Armed Robbery

On Sunday, December 1, 2013, at approximately 11:40 pm, the Egg Harbor Township Police Department responded to the parking lot of the Penny Point Park Apartments, in the Bargaintown section of the township, in reference to a robbery. 

Officer Michael O’Hagan responded and made contact with the victim, Terrell Pugh (20 years of age from Atlantic City), who stated he was in his vehicle in the parking lot when he was approached by the suspect. 

Disciplinary Notice and Suspension Filed Against Egg Harbor City Detective Steven Hadley

In June 2013 Galloway Township News first reported the employment of Egg Harbor City Police Detective Steven Hadley was under investigation by the Atlantic County Prosecutors Office (ACPO). 

At that time Egg Harbor City Clerk Meg Steeb would only confirm the fact that an investigation was being conducted and all questions needed to be forwarded to the Prosecutors Office.

On November 27, 2013, City Clerk Meg Steeb released the Preliminary Notice of Disciplinary Action filed against Hadley on October 7, 2013. Steeb also released the Final Notice of Disciplinary Action and Suspension filed against Detective Steven Hadley on November 7, 2013.
