Galloway Police Thank the Public for Use of Social Media in Locating Missing Person

On March 15, 2014 at 8:40 p.m. the Galloway Township Police Department put out pertinent information requesting the public’s assistance in locating a 61 year old missing female (Karen Ryba) with dementia that had walked away from her residence.

After numerous hours of checking the area with patrol and the use of K-9 dogs and bloodhounds, the police department was unsuccessful in locating Ms. Ryba that evening.

At 8:30 am the next morning, a concerned citizen contacted 9-1-1 after observing a female matching Ms. Ryba’s description walking down a local street. The citizen recognized Ms. Ryba from the description he had read on the Police Departments Facebook page. Because of the diligence of this citizen and the follow through to contact the police department, patrol officers were able to locate Ms. Ryba and return her home.

Ms. Ryba was un-injured and received the appropriate care she needed. The Police Department would like to thank the over 7600 citizens that logged in to view the missing person report on Ms. Ryba and also reiterate how successful social media has been in solving cases such as these and keeping the community informed and safe. As a reminder, anyone who does not have Facebook can also sign up for CODE RED alert(s) through the Police Department website at www.gtpd.org.
