New York City Man Indicted for Aggravated Sexual Assault of a 12-year-old Girl in Egg Harbor Township

MAYS LANDING – A New York City man, who is a registered sex offender in the state of California, has been indicted for the aggravated sexual assault of a 12-year-old girl, acting Atlantic County Prosecutor Jim McClain announced today.
On Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2013, an Atlantic County Grand Jury indicted Joseph Anthony Caracciolo, 47, most recently of New York City, on charges of aggravated sexual assault and endangering the welfare of a child.
In April of 2013, the Egg Harbor Township Police Department was alerted of the sexual assault of a 12-year-old girl that occurred at her father’s Egg Harbor Township home in July of 2012. The sexual assault resulted in a pregnancy. At the time of the report, the victim was nine months pregnant.

A man by the name of Joe Crillo was identified as the perpetrator of the assault. Police determined the name to be an alias.
Following a joint investigation conducted by the Egg Harbor Township Police Department, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force, and members of the “Innocence Lost” Task Force from the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office and the Atlantic County Sheriff’s Office, the suspect was identified as Caracciolo.
Caracciolo was charged with first-degree aggravated sexual assault.
On Aug. 28, detectives from the local, county and federal agencies located and apprehended Caracciolo in New York City.
During the course of the investigation, detectives learned that the defendant had crossed state lines traveling from New York to New Jersey and then taking the minor from New Jersey to the Poconos in Pennsylvania in order to engage in illegal sexual conduct with her.
On Sept. 17, the FBI additionally charged Caracciolo with travelling in interstate commerce for the purpose of engaging in illicit sexual conduct with a minor.
The Federal case against Caracciolo also remains pending.
Assistant Prosecutor John Flammer represents the State in its’ case.
Aggravated sexual assault, a crime of the first–degree carries a sentence of 10–20 years in New Jersey State Prison and up to $200,000 in fines. Endangering the welfare of a child, a crime of the third-degree, carries a prison sentence of three to five years and up to $15,000 in fines.
***The indictment is merely an accusation and not proof of guilt. In all criminal cases, an indicted defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
