Former South Jersey Gas Employee Charged with Theft by Deception

MAYS LANDING – A former employee of South Jersey Gas/South Jersey Industries was indicted yesterday afternoon for the theft from her employer of nearly $100,000, obtained by submitting falsified invoices to the company’s college tuition reimbursement program for courses she did not attend, Acting Atlantic County Prosecutor Jim McClain announced today.
On Wednesday, April 30, 2014, as a result of a 4-month investigation by the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office Financial Crimes Unit, an Atlantic County Grand Jury indicted Laila Milanian, age 39, of Cambridge Lane, Berlin, NJ, for Theft by Deception for the theft of over $98,000 from South Jersey Gas/South Jersey Industries, Inc.

The State alleges that between the fall semester of 2010 and the spring semester of 2012, Milanian was enrolled in South Jersey Industries’ Tuition Reimbursement Program at Penn State, the SMEAL MBA Executive Program, and that she submitted reimbursement invoices to her employer for classes she did not attend.
The State also alleges that Milanian invoiced for higher reimbursement than she was entitled to in courses that she did attend, by falsifying her grades. The South Jersey Industries Tuition Reimbursement Program has a graduated reimbursement schedule, rewarding higher course grades with a higher percentage reimbursement.
Theft by Deception is a 2nd degree crime, carrying a potential penalty of 5 to 10 years of incarceration in State prison.
Bail has been set for $50,000 cash full.
Milanian has yet to be taken into custody.
Assistant Prosecutor John Flammer represents the State in the case.
***The indictment is merely an accusation and not proof of guilt. In all criminal cases, an indicted defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.

Orange will suit her nicelty in prison where she belongs -- for a lot longer than two months of daytime reporting. Imagine stealing $98,000 form your employer telling them you're going to college! Sorry to see the court missed the boat on this one. She deserved more time. If anybody deserves serious time, she does. Not a person I shall ever want to meet again. In my opinion, Laila Malinia is a untrustworthy person who will cheat and steal to advance her own interests.
