Atlantic County Cops Charges with Official Misconduct and Sexual Assault of 16-year-old Girl

ATLANTIC COUNTY —Two police officers employed by municipal police departments of Atlantic County were arrested yesterday for separate and independent acts of official misconduct and child sexual assault, Acting Atlantic County Prosecutor Jim McClain announced.
An investigation of the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victims Unit, assisted by the Brigantine Police Department, resulted in the arrest Monday, May 19, 2014, of Brigantine Police Officer Ralph M. Pereira, 43, of the 5000 block of Ontario Avenue, Brigantine, NJ.

Pereira was arrested without incident in Brigantine, and charged with five (5) indictable offenses: Official Misconduct, 2 counts of Sexual Assault, Endangering the Welfare of a Child—all 2nd degree crimes—and Criminal Sexual Contact, a 4th degree crime.
The state alleges that Pereira committed the acts while holding a position of authority and disciplinary power over a 16 year-old female victim.
Pereira was lodged in the Atlantic County Justice Facility in lieu of $100,000 cash bail, set by Atlantic County Superior Court Judge Donna M. Taylor. Pereira made his initial appearance in Atlantic County Superior Court today at 1:30 p.m.

A concurrent investigation by the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victims Unit, assisted by the Atlantic City Police Department Internal Affairs Unit, resulted in the arrest on Monday, May 19, 2014, of Atlantic City Police Officer Andre Corbin, 43, of Northridge Drive, Mays Landing, NJ.
Corbin was arrested without incident in Atlantic City, and charged with six (6) indictable offenses: 2 counts of Official Misconduct, 2 counts of Sexual Assault, Endangering the Welfare of a Child—all 2nd degree crimes—and Criminal Sexual Contact, a 4th degree crime.
The state alleges that Corbin committed the acts while holding a position of authority and disciplinary power over a 16 year-old female victim.
Corbin was lodged in the Atlantic County Justice Facility, and released after posting $100,000 cash bail, set by Atlantic County Superior Court Judge James E. Isman.
A crime of the 2nd degree carries a potential sentence of 5 to 10 years of incarceration in New Jersey State prison. A crime of the 4th degree carries a potential sentence of imprisonment not to exceed 18 months.
