Galloway Police Warn Residents of NJ American Water Scam

On March 4, 2015 at approximately 2:00 p.m., the Galloway Township Police Department responded to a residence on the 300 block of Pitney Road in reference to the report of a burglary.

Upon arrival, patrol met with the 89 year old home owner who indicated that around 2:00 PM his doorbell rang and one male and one female were standing at his front door.

The individuals identified themselves as employees of the water company and stated that due to the cold weather, they were checking on elderly residents to make sure the pipes in their home were not frozen.

The male suspect convinced the homeowner to allow him inside the residence and told him to run the washing machine and kitchen sink for 30 minutes.  At this time, the female entered the home and ransacked the bedroom searching for valuables.

The only available description of the suspects is a white or Hispanic male approximately 5’8” 200lbs and a white female.

The Galloway Township Police Department would like to remind all residents to request identification from anyone who claims to be from a utility company.  Additionally, we recommend you do not allow them access to your residence without a prior appointment.

If you find their behavior suspicious or are concerned for any other reason lock your doors and call “911” immediately.  The Galloway Township Police would also like to encourage anyone who has an elderly friend or relative living on their own to contact them immediately and advise them of this scam.

Anyone with information on possible suspects in this case is asked to contact Officer Guercioni at 609-652-3705 extension 078.
