Folsom Man Sentenced to 30-years in Prison for Murder

MAYS LANDING – A Folsom man was sentenced this morning for the 2013 stabbing death of the 30-year-old woman with whom he lived, Atlantic County Prosecutor Jim McClain announced today.
Darrin K. Plumlee, 45, of 105 Lenape Terrace, Folsom Boro, was sentenced today by Atlantic County Superior Court Judge Michael A. Donio, to 24 years in New Jersey State Prison for killing 30-year-old Merry Abernathy, of the same address.
At approximately 8:00 a.m. on Friday, April 12, 2013, New Jersey State Police responded to 105 Lenape Terrace, Folsom. Upon arrival, they discovered the body of Merry Abernathy inside the home, dead of multiple stab wounds.
Plumlee was arrested at the scene and transported to the AtlantiCare Regioinal Hospital—Mainland Division, for treatment of superficial cuts to his wrist and neck, that the State alleges were self-inflicted.
Plumlee was charged with murder and weapons offenses, and lodged in the Atlantic County Justice Facility in lieu of $2,000,000 full cash bail, set by Atlantic County Superior Court Judge Mark Sandson. Plumlee has remained in custody since that time.
On Thursday, Oct. 24, 2013, an Atlantic County Grand Jury indicted Plumlee for murder and weapons offenses.
On Friday, January 2, 2015, Plumlee pled guilty to aggravated manslaughter for the killing of Merry Abernathy, and today Judge Donio sentenced Plumlee to 24 years in prison. Pursuant to the No Early Release Act (NERA), Plumlee must serve 85% of the sentence—or 20 years, 4 months, and 24 days—before becoming eligible for parole.
Chief Assistant Prosecutor John Maher represented the State in the matter.
