Egg Harbor Township Man Indicted for Animal Cruelty After Killing Female Pit Bull

MAYS LANDING – An Egg Harbor Township man was indicted for animal cruelty last week in connection with the killing of a dog, Acting Atlantic County Prosecutor Jim McClain announced today.
On Wednesday, June 11th, Steven D. Geisel, 50, of the 2000 block of Ocean Heights Avenue, Egg Harbor Township, was indicted by an Atlantic County Grand Jury on one (1) count of animal cruelty—a 3rd degree crime—for the bludgeoning death of a female pit bull canine in a wooded area adjacent to Ocean Heights Avenue in Egg Harbor Township, on or about Jan. 29, 2014.

An investigation by the Egg Harbor Township Police Department and the Atlantic County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) led to the animal cruelty charge, and Geisel’s arrest on Feb. 12, 2014.
Bail was set by Municipal Court Judge H. R. Switzer at $10,000 full. Geisel was lodged in the Atlantic County Justice Facility in lieu of bail, where he has remained since.
The State alleges that Geisel beat the dog with a blunt object, inflicting traumatic injuries to its neck that caused its death.
A 3rd degree crime carries a potential penalty of 3-5 years of incarceration in New Jersey State prison.
The indictment is merely an accusation and not proof of guilt. In all criminal cases, an indicted defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
