Atlantic City Man Sentenced to Life in Prison for 2012 Shooting Murder

MAYS LANDING – An Atlantic City man was sentenced to life imprisonment for the 2012 shooting murder of a Pleasantville man, Acting Atlantic County Prosecutor Jim McClain announced.
Yesterday, Gregory J. Gibbs, 37, received a life sentence in New Jersey State Prison for the murder of Chikki Smith, 33, of Pleasantville, who was found fatally shot in a parking lot behind a bar on South Main Street in Pleasantville on Dec. 3, 2012.

Just before midnight on Dec. 3, Pleasantville Police responded to Main Street after receiving a 9-1-1 report of shots fired. Upon arrival, police discovered Smith’s body in the parking lot behind Sam’s Rialto Bar & Grill at 18 South Main Street, the victim of multiple gunshot wounds.
A homicide investigation by the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit and the Pleasantville Police Department led to Gibbs’ arrest one month later. Gibbs was indicted for the murder in July 2013.
On April 17, 2014, following a one-day trial, a jury found Gibbs guilty of murder, possession of a firearm for an unlawful purpose, unlawful possession of a handgun, and possession of a firearm by a convicted person.
Gibbs’ sentence included life imprisonment for the murder, and an additional 20 years in prison for unlawful possession of a handgun, the sentences to be served consecutively. Gibbs will not become eligible for parole until he has served 73 3⁄4 years in prison.
“Justice was served, and Gibbs is now prevented from doing this to someone else,” said Assistant Prosecutor Edmund Mallqui-Burgos, who represented the State in the case.
