Prosecutors Office and Hamilton Township Conduct Critical-Incident-in-Schools Exercise

HAMILTON TOWNSHIP – The Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office and the Township of Hamilton Police Department conducted the annual Atlantic County Critical-Incident-in Schools Exercise today in Mays Landing.
For the past 11 years, the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office has partnered annually with a local municipal police department and a local school to execute a simulation of a school crisis scenario.

The objective of the exercise is to test the ability of law enforcement to respond to a crisis situation within the school and to work with the school to make sure emergency plans are adequate. The exercise provides law enforcement authorities and education staff the opportunity to practice and improve their emergency preparedness response plans, and sharpen the coordination of resources. The exercise tested law enforcement and school security skills, including facility lockdown, tactical deployment, communications, and hostage negotiations.
This year, the exercise was held at the Atlantic Cape Community College – Mays Landing Campus, located off Route 322 in Hamilton Township. The exercise took place 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. today.
Local, County and State agencies participated in the exercise, including: the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office, the Township of Hamilton Police Department, the Atlantic County Office of Emergency Management, the Atlantic County Emergency Response Team/SWAT, Atlantic County Hostage Negotiators, American Red Cross, the 177th Fighter Wing of the Air National Guard, and the leadership and staff of the Atlantic Cape Community College.
