Tip Leads to Capture of Man who Allegedly Assaulted Galloway Officer

James Gallaway
On July 29, 2015, K-9 Sgt. Scott Winneberger initiated a car stop on Wrangleboro Road.  The driver suddenly accelerated from the scene while Sgt. Winneberger was speaking to him, striking the officer with his vehicle.  Winneberger sustained minor injuries.

The vehicle was found crashed a short distance from the scene of the stop and the driver had fled on foot.  Further investigation resulted in the driver being identified as James Gallaway of Galloway Township.  Gallaway could not be immediately located.  Heroin was found in the vehicle.

Warrants for Gallaway were issued for Aggravated Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer, Assault by Auto, Eluding, Obstruction, Possession of CDS, and numerous motor vehicle violations.

On October 18, 2015, The Galloway Township Police Department received information that Gallaway was inside an apartment on Meadowridge Road in the Smithville section and may be armed.

Patrol officers secured the area and evacuated nearby residents and Atlantic County SWAT responded.  Gallaway voluntarily surrendered at 1:37 AM without incident.  Evacuated residents were allowed to return to their homes at that time.

A search warrant for the home was executed by the SWAT team and Galloway Township Police Detectives.  Additional charges are pending.  Gallaway was lodged at Atlantic County Justice Facility.

Galloway EMS, Absecon EMS, Atlanticare EMS, and Galloway Township Public Works assisted at the scene.  Egg Harbor City Police assisted in handling calls for service in Galloway during the incident.
