Galloway Police Arrest Burglar After K-9 Tracks Him Down

On Thursday, October 15, 2015 at approximately 2:02 am, Officer John Mooney was on patrol in the area of South New York Road and Leeds Point Road when he observed a suspicious male, later identified as Kevin Hayek, 45 of Tuckerton, riding a bicycle and carrying a large bag.

As Officer Mooney attempted to stop Hayek he fled from the officer and ran in the direction of Leeds Point Road.

Additional patrol units responded to the scene along with K-9 Officer Hiram Melendez and his partner K-9 Chico.  K-9 Officer Melendez and K-9 Chico began a K-9 track where they quickly located Hayek’s bicycle as well as the bag he was carrying which contained numerous amounts of freshly cut copper piping.

The track continued to the backyard of a residence on Leeds Point Road where K-9 Chico located Hayek hiding behind several garbage cans.  Hayek surrendered to K-9 Chico and was taken into custody.

Further investigation reveals that Hayek broke into an abandoned residence on the 100 block of South New York Road where he removed the copper piping.

In addition to the burglary charges Hayek was also found in possession of heroin.  Hayek was lodged in The Atlantic County Justice Facility on numerous charges as well as active warrants out of Ocean County, NJ and Warrington, Pennsylvania.
