MAYS LANDING – A New York City man—a registered sex offender in the State of California—pled guilty today to the sexual assault of a 12-year-old girl, Atlantic County Prosecutor Jim McClain announced.
Joseph Anthony Caracciolo, 48, of New York City, pled guilty today to Aggravated Sexual Assault, the victim a 12-year-old Atlantic County female.
In April of 2013, the Egg Harbor Township Police Department was alerted of the sexual assault of a 12-year-old girl that occurred in July of 2012.

A man by the name of Joe Crillo was identified as the perpetrator of the assault. Police determined the name to be an alias.
Following a joint investigation conducted by the Egg Harbor Township Police Department, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force, and members of the “Innocence Lost” Task Force from the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office and the Atlantic County Sheriff’s Office, the suspect was identified as Caracciolo.
Caracciolo was charged with the crime, and on Aug. 28, 2013, detectives from local, county and federal agencies located and apprehended Caracciolo in New York City. He was lodged in the Atlantic County Justice Facility in lieu of bail, where he remains.
During the course of the investigation, detectives learned that the defendant had crossed state lines traveling from New York to New Jersey and then taking the minor from New Jersey to the Poconos in Pennsylvania in order to engage in illegal sexual conduct with her.
On Sept. 17, 2013, the FBI additionally charged Caracciolo with traveling in interstate commerce for the purpose of engaging in illicit sexual conduct with a minor. The Federal case against Caracciolo also remains pending.
On Oct. 30, 2013, an Atlantic County Grand Jury indicted Joseph Anthony Caracciolo on charges of aggravated sexual assault and endangering the welfare of a child.
Today, Caracciolo pled guilty before Atlantic County Superior Court Judge Kyran Connor to Aggravated Sexual Assault, a 1st degree crime.
In accordance with a plea agreement, Caracciolo will serve a 20 year sentence of incarceration in New Jersey State prison.
Pursuant to the No Early Release Act (NERA), Caracciolo must serve 85% of the sentence—17 years—before becoming eligible for parole. In addition, upon release Caracciolo will be subject to parole supervision for life, and Megan’s Law registration.
Assistant Prosecutor John Flammer represents the State in the matter.
