Mullica Township Police Facebook Page
On Friday, December 13, 2013 at approximately 1:00 a.m. a motor vehicle crash was reported at the intersection of Nesco and Jackson Roads. A second report was soon received that indicated that the vehicle was on fire and the driver was trapped in the vehicle.

Officers arrived to find a vehicle fully engulfed. They also found the driver and a passer by outside of the vehicle. It was discovered that the driver, John Hem 22 of Barnegat Light, who is now under investigation for driving while intoxicated, was trapped in the vehicle as it was on fire.

A Thomas Clark, 34, of Tuckerton NJ drove up upon the scene with his spouse. His spouse called 911, Clark went to see if he could help the driver. He found the driver trapped in the vehicle. Clark used a knife to cut away the seatbelt he was than able to pull Hem out of the vehicle.

Hem sustained moderate injuries, he was transported to Atlanticare City Division by EMS. Clark described the scene as very dangerous. He indicated that flames were coming through the floor as he pulled Hem out of the car.

It is clear through investigation that Mr. Clark saved Hem's life. This agency would personally thanks Mr. Clark for his actions, without them it is likely Hem would have not have faired as well as he did. Charges for DWI are pending on Hem.
