Former Pomona Fire Chief Sustained Fatal Injuries in Motor Vehicle Crash

On Thursday, January 28, 2021 at 8:31pm, the Galloway Township Police Department responded to the area of US RT 30 and S. Balboa Avenue for the report of a motor vehicle crash involving one vehicle and a pedestrian. 

Upon arrival, Patrol units located a 2002 green Ford Taurus stopped on US RT 30 in the outside lane at the intersection of Columbus Avenue. The driver was identified as Julianne Johnson; a 55 year old female from Hammonton, NJ. Patrol units also located a pedestrian down in the roadway west of the vehicle’s location. 

The pedestrian was identified as Charles Winkler Jr.; a 74 year old male from Galloway, NJ. 

Initial investigation revealed that Johnson was traveling westbound, on US RT 30 in the area of S. Balboa Avenue, in the outside lane when she struck Winkler who was walking eastbound in the outside westbound lane. Johnson’s vehicle came to a rest in the area of Columbus Avenue. 


Mr. Winkler sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.  Mrs. Johnson was uninjured.  


This crash is being investigated by Patrolman Ronald Gorneau #95, Patrolman Nicholas Stewart #107 and Patrolman Cody Trout #117 of the Galloway Township Police Department's Traffic Safety Unit.
