Former Police Detective Pled Guilty to Official Misconduct; Exploiting Position to Engage in Sexual Conduct

MAYS LANDING – A former Egg Harbor City Police Detective pled guilty today to official misconduct for exploiting his position as a police officer in order to engage in sexual conduct with several women, Atlantic County Prosecutor Jim McClain announced.
On Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2013, Steven Hadley, 31, of Port Republic, was charged with four counts of second-degree official misconduct.

Galloway Township News was the first news agency to report that Hadley was the subject of a criminal investigation in August 2013 and on September 24, 2013, Steven Hadley was charged with four counts of second-degree official misconduct.
The charges specified that Hadley committed acts related to his office that constituted unauthorized use of his official position as a police officer in order to obtain benefit for himself, specifically sexual conduct.

The State alleges that, while performing his official duties, Hadley took part in sexual acts with four different women on various occasions, spanning the period between January of 2010 through May of 2013.

One of the alleged victims, Christine Meale, of Egg Harbor City filed a lawsuit against Hadley and the Egg Harbor City Police Department accusing Hadley of repeated sexual assault and emotional torment.
Hadley’s attorney was served with the charges on behalf on his client because Hadley was hospitalized in critical condition at the time following a serious car accident.

Today, Hadley waived presentation of the case to a Grand Jury and pled guilty to the accusation. In accordance with a plea agreement, Hadley pled guilty before Atlantic County Superior Court Judge Michael A. Donio to one count of Official Misconduct, a crime of the 2nd degree.
A 2nd degree crime carries a potential penalty of incarceration in New Jersey State Prison for 5-10 years.
Hadley will be sentenced by Judge Donio on November 21, 2014. Immediately following the entry of the guilty plea, at the request of the State, Judge Donio signed an order forfeiting the defendant’s public position and any pension rights.
First Assistant Prosecutor Diane Ruberton represents the State in the case.

So, after all this back and forth. I would appear once again GTN had this story RIGHT from the jump. That is CREDIBILITY.But I do have to ask, in light of the Ray Right case, WHY is this county still making deals. There is NO DOUBT they had this disgraced detective, and it's pretty obvious to someone who can objectively look at the big picture see things. A) This detective was a former detective of the Prosecutor's Office. B) His father was a high ranking detective (LT) of the same agency. C) The detective gets notified (allegedly) from his attorney of pending charges, and he "goes for a ride" gets North on the parkway, (with no destination in mind) and unexplainably leaves the roadway, just by happenstance at a overpass, and crashes.

None of that sounds fishy to anyone? Whatever. Now then, I wonder, all those who based the publisher apologize now? It's the least you can do. I only hope once and for all this publication gets its' due, once again FIRST to report, and FIRST to get IT RIGHT.

Great job, GTN...Just ask yourself this, if it were you, do you think they'd drop 3 of the 4 counts? Nope.

Daddy must be so proud. I guess all the people who have been victimized by the Hadley(s) are now getting the last lol. I feel bad for the wife who stuck by him and spends her nights turning her husband over in bed only to wake up and take care of the kids.

Well, well, well...do you hear that? Crickets...So all of those who bashed Ms. Tilton about publishing this story originally, and called her all kinds of names, we expect to see your "I'm sorry" letters published here soon. Somehow, like Rev. Al Sharpton, I bet they're not coming.

So, Mr. Hadley, you ARE guilty, you ARE as these women claim. I read with laughter the comments from your suit and tie attorney with regard to your "honorable" career and one wrong decision. If that is not laughable, there is absolutely ZERO of your career which could be considered honorable. You single-handily disgraced the oath in which you swore to uphold. You not only brought shame and dishonor to your family, you furth are such a great role model to your children. I admire your wife for standing by you, but clearly she is thinking, why would he pled guilty when he told me he wasn't? Here's a secret - HE LIED to you just as he lied to the investigators. Thus negating any type of "honorable" service he has even thought about holding.

Didn't his father start out as an EHC cop, then go to the ACPO? Son followed in his footsteps, but when EHC scored that great contract (after years of horrible pay) he proved his dedication and jumped ship to come back to EHC.

Why is that after reading the entire compliant filed by the victim, I believe HER. Daddy may have pulled some strings to make sure the victim which filed the federal lawsuit's charges were one of them dropped. Sure, this way, the civil suit cannot say "he pled guilty" to the criminal charges. Lest anyone think for a second that's not the "political prosecution" keeping their "bull" conviction rate, and still PROTECTING their own. Of course they knew about the federal lawsuit, so of course they said "pled" to this one, and we'll dismiss the one which could really jam you up.

While I do not wish anyone to suffer the injuries sustained when you "just happened to leave the road" I really do believe that's payback. I just hope you're wife isn't suffering. Sadly, until she opens her eyes, she still has to look at you daily, and think "how could he do this to our family" it's simple. They call that selfish behavior...it's something you develop, wonder where he gets that (eyeroll).

I was a person that criticized Lisa Tilton for publishing constant stories about Detective Steve Hadley. My critisim was constructive, I thought. I was duped by the family and led to believe he was innocent. I was told he didn't do anything wrong and that his accident was in fact an accident. I was wrong. Sometimes people can apologize to someone and they may not accept their apology. I hope Ms Tilton accepts mine because I trusted blindly. She was right, her stories were right and in my book, she is reliably credible in this website. I feel sorry for the family and friends of the family that trusted him.
