Galloway & Stockton University Reach 15-year PILOT Agreement; Over $300,000 Per Year

Galloway Township and Stockton University have teamed up once again for a third agreement for voluntary financial contributions for the Seaview Country Club property located on Route 9. 

Since 2011, the Township has received over $300,000 per year in voluntary contributions that offsets the taxes the Township would have lost with Stockton's tax exemption status.  Those agreements were for 3-years, expiring December 31, 2016.

On December 13, 2016, the Township signed their third agreement, this time for 15-years with Stockton University.  The Township has guaranteed revenue from Stockton University till 2031. 

Knock Out Opioid Abuse Town Hall Meeting Scheduled for April 10th

Absecon, NJ- 4/03/17- Join Together Atlantic County, a county-wide substance misuse prevention coalition, will be co-hosting a Knock Out Opioid Abuse Town Hall with the Atlantic County Opiate Task Force, The Partnership for a Drug-Free New Jersey, Horizon Foundation for New jersey and Stockton University. 

The Atlantic County Town Hall will be held on Monday, April 10, 2017 from 3:30pm- 6pm in Stockton University’s Alton Auditorium.

The Knock Out Opioid Abuse Town Hall series provides information to NJ residents to help them make better decisions for loved ones, and to better understand the link between opioid prescription drug abuse and rising heroin abuse. Members of the community can come out and have their voice heard, and be part of the solution to end opioid abuse in Atlantic County. 

According to the CDC, “Opioids (including prescription opioids and heroin) killed more than 33,000 people in 2015, more than any year on record. Nearly half of all opioid overdose deaths involve a prescription opioid”. The CDC also states that, “The number of people who started to use heroin in the past year is also trending up. Among new heroin users, approximately three out of four report abusing prescription opioids prior to using heroin. The increased availability, lower price, and increased purity of heroin in the US have been identified as possible contributors to rising rates of heroin use”.

Stockton University Opens New Get FIT Trail

Galloway, N.J. – A new ¼ mile fitness trail with 10 stations for stretching and strength training loops through a scenic stretch of Stockton University’s Pinelands campus. The trail, which opened this week, is available to the public for exercise and recreation.

For students in the School of Health Sciences, the trail offers more than just an exercise opportunity. They are working with individuals with developmental disabilities to help them lead healthy lifestyles.

Alysia Mastrangelo, professor of Physical Therapy, Joan Perks, associate professor of Nursing, and Mary Kientz, associate professor of Occupational Therapy, developed Get FIT @ Stockton, an exercise and nutrition program that helps individuals with developmental disabilities live healthier lives. The program, now in its third year, is a partnership between Stockton, Family Resource Network (FRN) and The Arc of Atlantic County.

Former Galloway Mayor Joins Stockton University Board of Trustees

Galloway, NJ – Meg Worthington, a commercial/residential real estate agent and management consultant, joined the Stockton University Board of Trustees this week. Worthington, former mayor and councilwoman of Galloway N.J., was sworn in at the university’s Feb. 24 board meeting.

Worthington is one of three new members to join the Stockton University Board of Trustees. Ellen Bailey, Esq., a member of the firm of Eckert, Seamans, Cherin and Mellott, LLC in Philadelphia, and Andy Dolce, founder and chairman emeritus of Dolce Hotels and Resorts, were also sworn in at the Feb. 24 meeting.

Atlantic County, Stockton University Plan $31 Million Dollar Dispatch Center; Some Municipalities to Pay Double in Costs

Atlantic County and Stockton University have entered into an estimated $31 million dollar contract for a Countywide Dispatch Center and Stockton Police Center.  The catch is every taxpayer in Atlantic County will flip the majority of the bill for years to come and layoff of employees will be required.

On November 10, 2015 Atlantic County conducted a presentation in which every Mayor was invited to attend. The County presented what appears to be outdated figures of a project that is estimated to cost about $31 million dollars which is to be bonded. 

According to the presentation released by Atlantic County, Stockton University will contribute $4.8 million to the project and 8 acres of land located on Stockton's property on Pomona Road and Duerer Street, for the complex to be built.

Stockton University Begins Thinning Phase of Forest Management Plan

Galloway Township, NJ – A healthier forest with less chance of catastrophic fire over time is an aspect Stockton researchers will study as the second phase of the Stockton Forest Management Plan begins.

A cut-to-length tree harvester, operated by Colin McLaughlin of Advanced Forestry Solutions based in Pittsgrove, NJ, cut down selected trees in the woods off Vera King Farris Drive on June 30. Trees are being removed from Stockton’s woods over the coming weeks under the university’s Forest Management Plan, which is the state’s first comprehensive stewardship plan on public land within the region.

Radio Show Host Harry Hurley and Wife Margie Donate Nursing Scholarship to Stockton

Galloway Township, NJ - Nursing students at Stockton University’s School of Health Sciences will benefit from a new scholarship donated today by WPG radio talk show host Harry Hurley and his wife, Margie, who comes from a family of nurses.

The Joan Fineran Nursing Scholarship is named in honor of Mrs. Hurley’s late mother, who was a dedicated nurse for over 50 years, serving at the Atlantic City Medical Center, the Betty Bacharach rehabilitation center when it was in Longport, and the former Children’s Seashore House in Atlantic City, among other facilities.

Stockton Softball Team Donates LPGA Concession Tips to Memorial Scholarship Endowment Honoring Late Player Tara Barker

Galloway Township, NJ – Stockton University’s softball team honored the late Tara Jean Barker, a former star athlete and student, by donating $800 in tips raised at concession stands during the ShopRite LPGA Classic tournament, held May 29-31 at the Stockton Seaview Hotel and Golf Club, to the Tara Jean Barker Memorial Scholarship endowment.

Barker, a two-time Stockton graduate who earned a Biology degree (2006) and a Doctor of Physical Therapy (2008), was the first softball player to be inducted into the university’s Athletics Hall of Fame in 2013, which is the year she lost her 17-month battle with cancer. Her parents, Greg and Beverly Barker, established a memorial scholarship endowment through the Stockton University Foundation in their daughter’s name.
